A HUGE thank you to the fantastic Chrissie Wellington, parkrun's Global Head of Health and Wellbeing, for explaining Strive for Five here:
Would you like to be able to walk 5k in one go?
If you are looking for a plan to help you progress to walking 5k, then why not check out parkrun’s Strive for Five programme?
This easy to follow, eight week plan provides you with targets to aim for each week, with the end goal being to walk 5k. You can take part in parkrun during the programme, or you could choose to walk in a place and at a time of your own choosing.
Remember that it is only a guide, so go at your own pace and do as much or as little as you can or want, celebrating your progress along the way.
“This is a great idea. A 5k run may feel like too much for some, but 5k walk, that's ace! I love my walking and wish this had been around when I started getting more active 18 months ago. I hope it encourages many to move more” Ruthy Ra Lang
“For some people ‘parkwalk’ could be an end in itself. For others it might take them to a point where it’s safe to consider Couch to 5k”. Arthur Grant
“A good build up to the magic 5K walk!” Susan Bannock
Why not team up with a few friends or family members and Strive for Five together, and make it a wonderful group celebration when you all complete the 5k walk?
Of course, you don't have to be able to complete the full 5km to participate in a parkrun. You could also come along and volunteer in a range of different roles (no experience required!) or support those who are walking and running, and join everyone for a coffee and a chat afterwards.
You can register for parkrun here, and find your local parkrun here. Each event has its own webpage which gives more details about the event and contact details if you want to find out more or have any questions.
